Pero la interacci\u00f3n es intr\u00ednsecamente d\u00e9bil debido a un importante desajuste de escala: la longitud de onda de la luz visible es unas 1.000 veces mayor que un electr\u00f3n, por lo que la forma en que ambas cosas se afectan mutuamente est\u00e1 limitada por esa disparidad.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ahora, unos investigadores de la Universidad de Hong Kong en China, el Instituto Tecnol\u00f3gico de Massachusetts (MIT) en Estados Unidos y otras instituciones han ideado una forma revolucionaria de hacer posibles interacciones m\u00e1s robustas entre fotones y electrones, que produce un aumento espectacular de la emisi\u00f3n de luz a partir de un fen\u00f3meno denominado \u201cradiaci\u00f3n de Smith-Purcell\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Este avance seguramente tendr\u00e1 repercusiones importantes para la investigaci\u00f3n cient\u00edfica fundamental y para aplicaciones comerciales, aunque su puesta en pr\u00e1ctica requerir\u00e1 m\u00e1s a\u00f1os de investigaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mediante una combinaci\u00f3n de simulaciones por ordenador y experimentos de laboratorio, el equipo de Yi Yang (Universidad de Hong Kong) descubri\u00f3 que utilizando un haz de electrones con un cristal fot\u00f3nico especialmente dise\u00f1ado (una losa de silicio sobre un aislante, con agujeros a escala nanom\u00e9trica) es posible lograr una emisi\u00f3n m\u00e1s intensa en muchos \u00f3rdenes de magnitud de lo que ser\u00eda posible normalmente en la radiaci\u00f3n de Smith-Purcell convencional. Esto puede hacerlo especialmente valioso para fabricar fuentes de emisi\u00f3n en longitudes de onda dif\u00edciles de producir con eficacia, como las ondas del orden del terahercio, la luz
